BACKGROUND:
As a time paradox duplicate of the main character who got turned into a sentient sword and later combined with a cursed grass sword with a demon inside it to form the grass boy body they share...Fern's history is uh, complicated. When his grass body was first formed, his cocktail of memories was fuzzy and hard for him to make sense of--he had Finn's memories up to when his consciousness was created, memories of his time as the Finn Sword, and seemed to also have the Grass Sword's memories. Fern's history is spread between a handful of wiki pages and some aren't finished/written well so I figured giving a summary where it's all in one place would be less confusing(however, here's Finn's page; this is already long enough as it is so I only mentioned the things that are super relevant to Fern specifically but Fern has 175 episodes worth of Finn's memories).
After being separated from his human birth parents as a baby, Finn was raised as the adoptive son of two dogs (with two dog brothers, Jake and Jermaine) and grew up in the Land Of Ooo, an absurd magical world that was much like our own before being drastically altered 1000 years ago by an apocalyptic event known as the Mushroom War. Ooo is filled with all kinds of fantasy creatures, and for a long time Finn was thought to be the only human left. During the series Finn (who starts out as a 12 year old) and Jake live together in a treehouse and go on various adventures--from extremely mundane things to universe hopping and repeatedly stopping a creature known as the Lich from destroying all life.
At 15, Finn bought a sword made of grass that seems to have a life of its own and found himself unable to get rid of it--it always ended up wrapped around his arm again when he tried to put it down. After confronting the man who sold it to him, he learned that it was cursed to be bound to its owner forever. Finn decided to just accept this and hope that would make the sword obey his will better.
Not long after, Finn learned that his biological father Martin was alive and trapped in a prison known as the Citadel as punishment for what is referred to as a cosmic crime(we're never told what specifically Martin did). When the Lich killed a powerful wish-granting being known as Prismo, he was apprehended for this cosmic crime and Finn and Jake managed to follow as he was taken to the Citadel too. Many prisoners ended up released in the resulting chaos, including Martin...who was happy to emotionally manipulate Finn into helping him escape but ultimately left Finn to die. Finn lost his arm attempting to pursue his father, but the sword stayed with him and eventually it provided him with a new arm. On several occasions the arm either turned into plant vines or the Grass Sword emerged from the palm...whether Finn wanted this to happen or not, as he usually ended up fighting his arm for control to prevent it from doing violent things he'd rather not do.
Finn and Jake eventually ended up pulled into a plan set up by a past version of Prismo to revive himself if he was ever killed. This involved creating time paradox duplicates of Finn and Jake--the duplicate Jake would sleep forever and provide the dreams needed for Prismo to exist, and the other Finn...well, the original Finn would have to stop him from waking the duplicate Jake up, and coming into contact with his other self would probably destroy the duplicate Finn.
But it didn't.
The duplicate Finn was instead transformed into a sword, which was named the Finn Sword and immediately became the original Finn's new favorite weapon. From the perspective of the Finn Sword Finn, the inside of the sword looked like a mostly empty room with a window he could view the outside world with. He was able to talk to people outside the sword, but seems to only do so on occasion.
After being taken on a handful of Finn's adventures, the Finn Sword was accidentally dropped off a bridge and stolen by Bandit Princess, who used it to kill people and commit robberies. The Finn in the Finn Sword was very upset by this, angrily informing her that he was for hero use only, but this only encouraged her because she liked the idea of corrupting him. He began to desperately try to send the original Finn psychic visions of himself being used for evil so Finn would come save him.
When Finn arrived, the Grass Sword emerged from his palm and he used it to fight off Bandit Princess, but ended up penetrating the crystal on the hilt of the Finn Sword in the process, destroying the Finn Sword Finn's window to the outside world and infecting his little room with bits of the Grass Sword...including, apparently, the Grass Demon inside it. The spider-like grass creature wasted no time covering the tiny room with grass-web and trapping the Finn Sword's Finn in a cocoon.
Finn stopped using Finn Sword for awhile and spent some time mourning his counterpart, but eventually took to using it again as it was still perfectly functional as a sword. In the middle of a fight with a friend who seemed to be not entirely herself, Finn found himself fighting with his grass arm, which wanted to kill her. Eventually he managed to stop it, but it then instead detached itself from Finn entirely to combine with the Finn Sword, now forming a person made entirely of grass...and that's how we got Fern!
Fern initially believed himself to be the original Finn, because out of the combination of memories he had now Finn's seemed to be the first he could access. After a few confrontations with Finn and Jake and a lot of confusion over no one recognizing him as Finn, he finally realized he was in fact a separate person now. Finn offered to let him stay with them, and Fern quickly became a part of their family (considered another brother).
Finn and Fern found themselves to be extremely similar in some ways (for obvious reasons), and yet Fern had become very different, as well. Fern was more emotionally volatile, negative, and prone to violence, both because he was created at a low point in Finn's life and instead of experiencing the positive growth Finn did, he only went through events that made things worse...and because of the Grass Demon he shared a body with. Finn struggled against it significantly when it supplied him with just an arm, and now it was the source of Fern's entire body. His relationship with the Grass Demon is represented with this visual.
Fern initially struggled against the Grass Demon's evil influence, though, because being heroic was a huge part Finn's (and therefor his) identity. While Finn was away on a long adventure elsewhere, Fern stood in for Finn as Ooo's hero...and was unfortunately unable to stop a handful of characters from losing control of themselves and transforming Ooo and all its inhabitants(including Fern, who became an unsettlingly perpetually happy mint boy known as "Fun") with their powers. This left Finn responsible for fixing things himself when he returned, and once Fern was restored to his grass self he took this failure pretty hard.
From there on, Fern began to wallow in the fact that everything seemed to always go wrong for him, but never for Finn, the person he was supposed to be but wasn't anymore. Finn attempted to help him find himself and boost his confidence, but was sidetracked by the possibility of the Lich influencing a young child to become evil and help him return to his full power. Fern ended up once again feeling like he failed in a crisis, and an understandably stressed out Finn spent the entire time bossing him around. The cruel irony of the situation is the actions Finn took to prevent someone else from succumbing to an evil influence are what tipped Fern over the edge.
The Grass Demon then revealed to Fern the ability to shapeshift so he looked like Finn again(just like it pretended to be a normal human arm for Finn), presenting him with the option to seemingly become his old self again instead of trying to learn to be happy as someone new. All he had to do was get the original Finn out of the way...so, he attempted to trap Finn in a tiny room reminiscent of his own within the Finn Sword. Fern was very clearly under the demon's influence at this point, demonstrated by a handful of physical changes such as his eyes changing to look exactly like the demon's.
The two ended up fighting and though a very confused and hurt Finn tried to convince Fern to just go home with him and pretend this never happened, he ended up accidentally killing Fern. But this wasn't really the end for Fern, as his remains were gathered by Princess Bubblegum's Uncle Gumbald, who rebuilt him as an even larger plant monster that he intended to use to take the Candy Kingdom from his niece. This new version of Fern came into conflict with Finn a few times, rejecting Finn's attempts to fix things between them.
As it became clear that Princess Bubblegum and her Uncle intended to wage war against one another, people began to worry that the Gum War would be another apocalyptic event like the Mushroom War. Finn, who had officially lost his taste for violent heroics after everything that happened with Fern, desperately tried to find a nonviolent solution. He ended up trapping himself, Jake, Fern, Princess Bubblegum, and Uncle Gumbald in a dream world to make everyone talk things out. Fern initially resisted, but was forced to cooperate when Jake pulled out Finn and Fern's collection of repressed memories for them to work through together. Once they finished, the Grass Demon appeared to them. Finn, seeming to immediately understand what it had been doing to Fern, assured him they could free him from it together. With Finn's help, Fern was able to kill it and his personality seemed to be restored to something more like the way it had been back when he was living with Finn and Jake.
Unfortunately, Fern's body couldn't stay together without the Grass Demon, and when he woke up he realized he was literally falling apart. Though the Gum War was avoided, another group of characters were busy summoning a chaos god while all this was happening. Fern used the last of his strength to fight one last battle to save Ooo with the people he cared about before disintegrating completely. His last words were a request for Finn to plant his remains at their house, and when Finn did so a large tree with a sword sticking out of it immediately grew.
PERSONALITY:
Since Fern was originally an exact copy of Finn, he started out with the same personality--and, even after growing into his own separate person, he's still fundamentally similar enough to Finn that they sometimes speak in unison. The audience initially meets Finn as a young child who was very enthusiastic about being a hero--going on adventures, helping people, killing monsters...It's something he had a pretty simplistic view of at first (understandable, for a 12 year old), but with time he developed a more nuanced, complex view of the world. Along with this comes a a desire to seek nonviolent solutions more and more often--something Fern does not develop with him, both because of the demon inside him (which wanted to make Finn do violent things against his will when it was attached to/part of his arm) and their diverging experiences. In one episode, we see Finn trying to talk down an upset character while Fern had suggested...severing his tendons or knocking him unconscious. Initially, though, pointing out Fern's violent impulses made him feel very guilty about them, and he would likely feel that way again with the demon's influence removed from him.
As someone who sees himself as a hero, Finn is very concerned with doing what he feels is right--he gets very upset when he's forced to compromise his morals or tricked into doing something he sees as wrong. Fern, of course, feels the same way at first--when he was a sword, he was extremely upset at the idea of being used for evil by Bandit Princess, and desperate for the original Finn to take him back from her. One of his first lines as a grass person was to declare that he's "100% hero," and he became very distressed when Finn and Jake initially treated him like a bad guy. Unfortunately for Fern, sharing a body with a demon seemed to make him naturally predisposed to being a little less morally upstanding than the original Finn even when he was at his best. At his worst, he did things like "attempting to kill and replace Finn" and "working for Princess Bubblegum's evil uncle"(who seems to have also manipulated him to some extent, but we really don't get many details on that). While these decisions are probably at least partially based on Fern's own negative emotions, for things to have gotten that extreme they also are most likely pretty heavily influenced by the Grass Demon, too. It's hard to imagine any version of Finn doing those things 100% on his own, and after Fern killed the demon he immediately went back to fighting on the side of the good guys.
But even if the demon's influence is most likely to blame for how bad things ended up getting, Fern would have plenty of messy negative emotions on his own. Fern's consciousness was created when Finn was at a low point, when he had just dealt with losing an arm(even if it did "grow back," it was an incredibly traumatic experience) and the disappointment of finally meeting his biological father only to learn he was a selfish manchild that did not care about him at all. For the most part, Fern did not benefit from any of the positive development Finn went through afterwards. Instead, he had his own specific traumatic experiences being piled on top of the baggage he had from his memories of being Finn.
Fern found his new life very frustrating--being unable to be "himself" because his old self is already taken, having all of the interpersonal relationships he remembers being part of his life belong to someone else and being treated like a stranger by everyone he cares about, having new physical limitations, etc. Though he does make an attempt to build a new identity for himself, he gets agitated over it not working out the way he wants very easily. Having another version of himself around who doesn't seem to have these problems certainly doesn't help, especially not when he seems to only ever mess things up himself, which quickly leads to him becoming very insecure and jealous. Now, not only would his friends and family no longer see him as the person they knew and cared about, they would see him as an inferior version of Finn. While Fern did have a genuinely positive relationship with Finn for awhile, this drove a wedge between them and things went south faster and faster as Fern watched Finn succeed where he failed more and more often. Fern's attempts to replace or surpass Finn while more heavily under the negative influence of the Grass Demon were definitely rooted in these feelings. Even if he wouldn't have become quite so hostile to Finn without the Grass Demon, this would definitely have been a problem that needed to be addressed at some point. Luckily, it is successfully addressed even with a demon-possessed Fern--through a reminder of the fact that at the end of the day they still are the same person and Finn understands a lot of his pain--and they make up with each other after killing the Grass Demon.
It's important to note that some of Fern's identity issues never truly have time to be resolved. He initially tried to find a new identity for himself as a grass person, because he felt it was clear that he couldn't just rely on trying to be Finn anymore, but that journey was derailed by the Grass Demon's influence becoming stronger as it presented him with the opportunity to replace Finn instead. He never has time to really do much after he finally kills the demon, so he doesn't know who he is without it, either. Considering how much distress this issue caused him before, it would likely continue to be on his mind a lot with yet another chance at life.
Though Fern has become cynical and moody, a lot of Finn's positive traits aren't entirely gone from him, even if some of them are buried a little deeper than they used to be. He still has the same goofy sense of humor and idea of fun, even if he isn't always in the mood for it. In his early days as a grass boy, we see that he's just as protective of the people he cares about as Finn--he even tried to protect people from Finn when they first met and he was convinced Finn was his imposter. It meant a lot to him that Finn and Jake do as much to help him as they do and that Finn trusted him to protect Ooo for him while he was away. Finn the hero, brother, and friend are still in there and a part of him, even if he's become someone else, too. We don't have much time left with him after he gets rid of the Grass Demon but from what we do see these traits start to come back to him as he seems to be able to get along with everyone again and knowingly uses his last moments to fight to protect the people he cares about.
POWER:
Grass Bod: Fern's canonical plant person physiology and associated abilities. Fern's body is, as the name implies, made of grass --though is seen taking on attributes of other plants as well. We've seen him grow thorns, flowers, and even a mushroom(which is. decidedly not actually a plant) on his body. Being a plant boy means he must photosynthesize to survive and is no longer capable of eating. He doesn't breathe the way a person does anymore, either, so he can't do things like playing a flute. Abilities he gains from his grass body include:
-Since his physical body comes from the Grass Sword, he can summon it from his body at will. He's even seen producing one in both hands at once. Though made of grass, it's very sharp and Fern can use it with extreme precision.
-Fern's grass body can shapeshift. Usually this is used to do things like extend or enlargen his limbs(like a character with stretching abilities might), produce thorns or vines, etc. Here's a few example pictures. I'm gonna say in MoM he won't be able to do anything that would make his appearance unrecognizable as himself--he does definitely have the ability to alter his appearance more drastically in canon (for example, he can make himself look like the original Finn and it's suggested that he could mimic other characters) but we're never really shown to what extent and I'm going to make him live with himself for now rather than giving him that ability here.
-Fern's body seems to be able to regenerate itself to some extent. When he rips off the ears of his hat (which is...technically part of his body even though he can take it off? being a grass boy is weird) they immediately grow back and the Grass Sword grew Finn a new arm when it was bonded to him, but a weedwhacker being shoved into Fern's chest makes him explode into a pile of grass. It's not quite that easy to off him in canon but I'm going to say significant damage to his head or torso will kill him here.
And I'm gonna say how the porter pulled him in stabilized his body so he won't fall apart now that he's not possessed by a demon anymore. He's still seen using his abilities after he killed it, in what little time he had left to live.
Green thumb: A non-canonical ability related to other plants. Talking to them can make them grow, but only if he's nice to them. We're talking showering these plants with compliments. How many it requires varies from plant to plant, but no matter what the larger he wants it to get the more it requires. Compliments do not have to make sense, however. He can tell a shrub it's a good dancer and it'll work.
